Henry Ford Health System plans to build a new 120,000-square-foot outpatient medical center in Plymouth Township at a former Kmart store at 40855 Ann Arbor Road.

When completed in 2021, it would be Henry Ford’s 31st medical center in Southeast Michigan. Two other outpatient medical centers are under construction in Royal Oak and Bloomfield Township. Royal Oak is expected to open during the summer of 2020 and Bloomfield this fall.

Most health systems in Michigan are undergoing massive construction of outpatient medical centers as payers, employers and patients are demanding lower-priced and more convenient care. For example, Beaumont Health is building a center in Livonia and plans 30 urgent-care centers in metro Detroit. Detroit Medical Center and Trinity Health also are building outpatient centers.

The Kmart closed in November 2017, and the building has sat idle. Henry Ford is expected to close on the property for an undisclosed price in mid-August and demolish the Kmart building. Construction is expected to be completed in 2021. The overall price tag of the development is expected to be $87.2 million.

“In keeping with our ongoing strategy, this development will bring a comprehensive level of services to our growing base of patients in western Wayne County,” Bob Riney, Henry Ford’s president of healthcare operations and COO, said in a statement.

Henry Ford will operate three outpatient facilities in western Wayne County, including facilities at 14300 N. Beck Road in Plymouth and 6100 Haggerty in Canton Township. Both provide primary and specialty care services and have a pharmacy on-site.

The Plymouth Township medical center, which will be staffed by more than 120, will offer patients primary care and specialty care, including cancer screening, cardiology, gastroenterology, integrative medicine like acupuncture and chiropractic care, lab services, orthopedics, a pharmacy, physical therapy, radiology, pharmacy and walk-in clinic.
